Long-serving Tucson City Council Member Richard Fimbres has announced his retirement, marking the end of a transformative era for Ward 5.

His departure, effective May 1, raises questions about the future of ongoing community initiatives and economic projects that have shaped Tucson’s south side.

Richard Fimbres: A Legacy of Service

After 16 years of dedicated service, Richard Fimbres is stepping down from his role as Tucson City Council Member for Ward 5.

Elected in 2009, Fimbres has been instrumental in driving significant growth and development in the area.

His efforts have not only revitalized neighborhoods but also fostered economic opportunities through key projects like The Bridges and the expansion of Raytheon.

What This Means for Local Residents

  • The retirement marks a shift in leadership for Ward 5, potentially impacting ongoing community projects.
  • Fimbres’ initiatives like the Homeless Work Program have set a precedent for social services in Tucson.
  • The selection process for his successor will be crucial to maintaining continuity in representation and advocacy.

Mayor Romero’s Comments

“It has been my honor to work with Richard Fimbres on issues that matter to Tucsonans. He founded the Homeless Work Program, an innovative public/private partnership that has helped hundreds of our unsheltered neighbors.

He worked to create the Buffalo Soldier’s Memorial to recognize the contributions of African American Soldiers in Southern Arizona. Richard focused on veterans’ issues and always worked to protect workers and the most vulnerable in our community.

Our collaboration with neighbors on the Santa Rita Park Master Plan is an excellent example of his positive impact to reinvest in Ward 5 neighborhoods.

I am grateful for his service and wish him the best as he retires to focus on his health and family after a long career in public service. On behalf of the residents of Tucson, thank you for your service, my friend.”

A Champion for Community Development

Fimbres’ tenure is marked by his commitment to veterans’ issues and community development. As a Vietnam-era Army veteran himself, he has been a staunch advocate for veterans’ rights and was inducted into the Arizona Veterans Hall of Fame in 2021.

His work on the Buffalo Soldier’s Memorial stands as a testament to his dedication to honoring African American soldiers’ contributions in Southern Arizona.
