Tucson is set to transform Santa Rita Park with an $8 million investment, breaking ground on April 24, 2025.

This project, funded by Proposition 407 and other sources, promises new recreational amenities and infrastructure improvements that aim to revitalize this historic community space.

Revitalizing Santa Rita Park: A Community Effort

The City of Tucson is embarking on a significant transformation of Santa Rita Park, a beloved community space that has long served as a gathering place for families and neighbors.

On April 24, 2025, at 9 a.m., Tucson Mayor Regina Romero and Ward 5 Council Member Richard Fimbres will lead the groundbreaking ceremony for the park’s revitalization.

Proposition 407

This ambitious project is made possible through voter-approved Proposition 407 funds, supplemented by contributions from the General Fund Framework dollars, Tohono O’odham Nation Gaming Grant, and Impact Fees.

The nearly $8 million investment aims to breathe new life into the park with enhanced green spaces and modern amenities.

What This Means for Local Residents

  • New playgrounds and splash pad with shade structures for family enjoyment
  • Improved walking paths connecting various park amenities
  • A dedicated plaza area for community events and gatherings
  • Over 300 trees and shrubs to enhance green spaces
  • A public art installation celebrating the park’s rich history

Possible Effect on Local Businesses

The revitalization of Santa Rita Park is expected to boost local commerce by attracting more residents and visitors.

However, businesses relying on park visitors may face temporary challenges during construction. In the long term, enhanced community spaces could lead to increased foot traffic and economic opportunities in the area.

Project Timeline

Phase Activities Dates
Planning Community input sessions April-June 2025
Construction Start Groundbreaking ceremony & fencing installation April 24-21, 2025
Completion Expected: Summer 2026

A Collaborative Vision for Tucson’s Future

The Santa Rita Park improvements are part of a broader initiative under Proposition 407 to enhance parks across Tucson.

Mayor Romero emphasized the importance of community input in shaping this project:

“The new playgrounds, splash pad, shaded walking paths, and beautiful art reflect a commitment to creating safe and welcoming spaces for all Tucsonans.”
