The UK government is positioning advanced nuclear technology as part of its strategy to expand clean energy supply and support industrial growth, including power needs for data centres and manufacturing.

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero announced on 4 February 2026 the publication of a new Advanced Nuclear Framework outlining a route for private-sector projects to enter a government-backed development pipeline.

The UK government has published a new Advanced Nuclear Framework aimed at accelerating private investment in advanced, small, and micro modular reactor projects, with a focus on clean energy supply for industry and data centres.

Government Announcement and Policy Context

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero said the framework is designed to stimulate private investment and establish a clear route to market for advanced nuclear technologies. Officials stated that the policy aligns with the government’s wider objectives to grow the economy, protect energy billpayers, and strengthen long-term energy security through homegrown clean power.

The announcement followed recent government decisions to greenlight Sizewell C in Suffolk and select Wylfa in North Wales as a site for the UK’s first small modular reactors. Ministers said these measures form part of a broader “golden age” of nuclear intended to support jobs and industrial development.

Investment Pipeline and Project Criteria

The government said it will create a formal “pipeline” of projects that meet readiness criteria, including technology maturity, developer capability, and financing plans. Developers will be able to submit proposals from March 2026, with assessments carried out by government experts and Great British Energy-Nuclear.

Successful applicants would receive in-principle government endorsement, which officials said could help unlock private investment while maintaining expectations of predominantly private financing. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero stated that this process is intended to provide long-term confidence to investors.

Project Pipeline Overview

Application Start Developers can submit proposals from March 2026 for assessment by government and Great British Energy-Nuclear.
Readiness Criteria Projects will be evaluated on technology status, developer capability, and financing plans.
Government Endorsement Successful projects may receive in-principle recognition to help attract private investment.

Industrial and Energy Applications

The government said advanced nuclear technologies, including advanced, small, and micro modular reactors, could be manufactured in factories and deployed more quickly than traditional nuclear plants. Officials stated that these systems are intended to supply clean power to the national grid or directly to industrial users such as factories and AI data centres.

The framework also highlighted the potential for advanced reactors to operate at higher temperatures, allowing excess heat to be used for industrial processes. Developers are aiming for the first advanced modular reactors to become operational in the UK by the mid-2030s, according to the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero.

Financial Support and Risk Framework

The government said endorsed projects may enter discussions on potential support measures, including revenue support once projects become operational. Officials also referenced risk protections for rare events, intended to limit exposure for taxpayers and billpayers.

Projects meeting investment criteria may approach the National Wealth Fund, which the government described as a potential catalytic investor to help de-risk private capital. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero said this approach is designed to balance public oversight with private-sector leadership.

Funding and Support Measures

Revenue Support Government may discuss operational revenue mechanisms for endorsed projects.
Risk Protection Framework includes provisions for protections against extremely rare events.
National Wealth Fund Fund may act as a catalytic investor to help attract further private capital.

Ministerial Comments

Patrick Vallance, Minister for Nuclear, said;

“Advanced nuclear technology could revolutionise how we power industry and propel the AI data centre boom – delivering more clean energy and jobs. We are seizing the opportunity to become a frontrunner in this space as part of our golden age of nuclear, creating the conditions for the industry to flourish.”

Lord Livermore, Financial Secretary to the Treasury, said;

“This government is delivering the largest investment in nuclear power in a generation to create new jobs and to drive economic growth right across the UK. The plans we have published today will provide investors with the long-term confidence they need to back advanced nuclear technologies here in Britain.”

Wrapping Up

The publication of the Advanced Nuclear Framework sets out a formal process for aligning private investment with government energy and industrial objectives.

By defining project criteria, endorsement pathways, and financial support options, the government said it aims to create conditions for new nuclear technologies to contribute to clean energy supply, job creation, and long-term energy security across the UK.
