In a defining moment for U.S. technological leadership, the Department of Energy (DOE) has announced a landmark collaboration with NVIDIA and Oracle to construct the nation’s largest AI supercomputer at Argonne National Laboratory. The system, named Solstice, will feature an unprecedented 100,000 NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs and deliver 2,200 exaflops of AI performance.

Designed to accelerate breakthroughs across disciplines—from healthcare to clean energy—Solstice will empower public researchers with computing capabilities previously available only to top-tier private labs. A companion system, Equinox, hosting 10,000 GPUs, will come online in 2026.

Accelerating Discovery Through Agentic AI

The Solstice and Equinox systems are engineered to support agentic AI—autonomous systems that reason, plan, and conduct experiments independently. Scientists will be able to use these systems to develop next-generation AI reasoning models using the NVIDIA Megatron-Core library and the TensorRT™ inference stack.

Agentic AI has already shown immense promise in materials research, molecular discovery, and medical diagnostics. By combining such intelligence with exascale computing, researchers can shorten time-to-discovery and generate insights at a scale once unimaginable.

“AI is the most powerful technology of our time, and science is its greatest frontier,” said Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA. “Together with Oracle, we’re giving U.S. researchers the most advanced AI infrastructure ever built.”

Public-Private Partnership Driving Innovation

Solstice represents a new public-private partnership model that aligns federal innovation goals with commercial expertise. Oracle’s cloud infrastructure (OCI) will anchor secure, high-performance data delivery while maintaining sovereign control over scientific workloads.

U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright described the collaboration as “a powerhouse for scientific and technological innovation,” praising President Trump’s administration for accelerating national computing capacity faster than any prior effort.

At Argonne, Director Paul K. Kearns emphasized the integration of Solstice with existing DOE experimental facilities such as the Advanced Photon Source. This seamless connection will allow scientists to perform real-time AI analysis on experimental data, dramatically expanding the lab’s research capability.

Technical Highlights of Solstice and Equinox

Feature Specification Purpose
GPU Model NVIDIA Blackwell B200 Tensor Core Delivers up to 20 petaflops AI performance per GPU
Total GPU Count Solstice: 100,000 Largest AI GPU deployment ever announced by DOE
Performance 2,200 exaflops combined AI throughput Supports trillion-parameter AI models
Interconnect 10 TB/s chip-to-chip link Enables low-latency model scaling
Security Confidential computing architecture Protects sensitive data in public research

Together, these specifications signal an order-of-magnitude leap in computational power. The Solstice system alone eclipses existing public supercomputers, giving U.S. scientists the tools to lead the next era of discovery.

Economic and Regional Impact

Beyond science, the project is expected to generate major economic benefits. Argonne’s previous supercomputing initiative supported over 1,000 regional jobs and $500 million in investment. The Solstice collaboration is projected to exceed those figures, fueling technical upskilling across Chicago-area universities and private research hubs.

Local industries will gain access to sovereign AI resources for public-interest research, opening opportunities in energy efficiency, advanced manufacturing, and climate modeling.

Transforming the Future of Scientific Research

With Solstice and Equinox, the DOE is setting the stage for a future where AI agents autonomously explore scientific questions and formulate solutions with minimal human intervention. These AI-powered systems could accelerate innovation timelines by years, making the U.S. the world’s hub for open scientific breakthroughs.

As Clay Magouyrk, CEO of Oracle, stated, “Our collaboration at Argonne will provide a critical resource to address the nation’s most complex challenges and accelerate the next wave of scientific breakthroughs.”

A New Era of Agentic AI-Powered Discovery

When fully operational, Solstice will redefine the boundaries of scientific computing. By uniting the resources of the Department of Energy, NVIDIA, and Oracle under a shared mission, the U.S. is launching a new era of agentic AI-powered science that ensures national leadership for decades to come.
