A United Stand Against Gender-Based Violence.

What does a tree have to do with solidarity? For the EU Delegation to China, it symbolizes hope, unity, and commitment.

On November 25, in commemoration of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, the Delegation launched an Orange Solidarity Tree as a beacon for change.

A Symbolic Gesture for a Critical Cause

In a garden adorned with vibrant hues of orange, ambassadors, diplomats, and advocates gathered to express their solidarity with victims of gender-based violence. The event, marked by speeches and symbolic gestures, was more than a formality—it was a powerful call to action.

Focal Moments of the Event:

  • EU Ambassador Jorge Toledo delivered a compelling speech urging collective responsibility to fight violence against women.
  • UN Women Country Representative Smriti Aryal echoed the need for global collaboration.
  • Attendees left heartfelt messages on the solidarity tree, pledging support for victims worldwide.

The tree, located at the EU Delegation’s entrance, will stand as a reminder throughout the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.

The EU’s Commitment: Policy Meets Action

The European Union has long prioritized ending violence against women and girls. Recent milestones include:

  • Enacting its first-ever law to combat violence against women in October 2023.
  • Developing a common EU helpline number to connect victims to support services.

These initiatives highlight a shift from words to action, ensuring survivors receive the support they deserve.

Solidarity Across Borders

In his speech, Ambassador Toledo emphasized that gender-based violence is not a “women’s issue”—it’s a societal challenge. He urged men to play an active role by challenging harmful norms and advocating for equality.

Noteworthy Statements from the Speech:

  • “Gender-based violence thrives in a culture of silence.”
  • “Men must become allies, advocates, and agents of change.”

This collaborative approach underscores that lasting change requires a united effort from individuals, institutions, and communities.

Why the Color Orange?

Orange symbolizes hope and a brighter future, aligning with the UN’s campaign to end violence against women. It’s a visual reminder that progress is possible when communities unite.

Join the Conversation

The launch of the Orange Solidarity Tree is a reminder that every action counts. From hanging a message of support to advocating in daily life, individuals across Europe and beyond can contribute to creating a safer world for women.

Together, the EU and its partners demonstrate that hope can grow even in the face of daunting challenges—like a tree rooted in solidarity.
