This Thanksgiving, Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III personally reached out to deployed U.S. service members stationed worldwide to express gratitude for their unwavering commitment to the nation.

His heartfelt calls not only uplifted spirits but also underscored the critical roles these men and women play in safeguarding national security and supporting global allies.

A Personal Connection with Deployed Units

Connecting with service members on Thanksgiving has become a meaningful tradition that reinforces national appreciation. Secretary Austin’s calls spanned across multiple military branches, recognizing the unique contributions of each unit:

  • 2nd Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment (Poland): Deployed to deter Russian aggression and support NATO allies.
  • Combat Logistics Battalion 31 (Okinawa): Focused on providing essential combat logistics in the Indo-Pacific region.
  • USS Stockdale (Fifth Fleet): Engaged in critical naval operations in the U.S. Central Command.
  • 379th Expeditionary Medical Squadron (Qatar): Delivering vital medical support to service members in high-risk areas.
  • 4th Space Operations Squadron (Colorado): Ensuring seamless military satellite communications from their base at Schriever Space Force Base.

Each call demonstrated a deep appreciation for their dedication, whether deployed in war zones or strategically crucial regions.

The Significance of Thanksgiving in Military Life

Thanksgiving has always been more than just a holiday for deployed service members. It’s a day that strengthens their connection to home, fosters camaraderie, and boosts morale:

  • A Taste of Home: Traditional Thanksgiving meals provided by the Defense Logistics Agency, from turkey to pumpkin pie, help bridge the emotional gap for those far from home.
  • Strengthening Bonds: Sharing these meals creates a sense of unity, offering a brief respite from the demands of military service.

Thanksgiving Impact on Troops

Benefits

Cultural Connection Strengthens emotional ties to home
Morale Boost Elevates spirits in high-stress environments
Camaraderie and Unity Fosters teamwork and belonging

These elements are essential in maintaining not only individual well-being but also overall operational readiness.

Historical Reflections: Thanksgiving in Military History

The connection between Thanksgiving and military service dates back to pivotal moments in U.S. history. Some notable Thanksgiving events have made lasting impressions both on troops and the nation:

  • President George W. Bush (2003): His surprise visit to Baghdad uplifted deployed troops during a turbulent time in the Iraq conflict.
  • Operation Desert Shield (1990): President George H.W. Bush’s visit to Saudi Arabia showcased the nation’s unwavering support for deployed forces in the Gulf.

These instances highlight how Thanksgiving serves as a moment for national reflection and gratitude, reinforcing the bond between the armed forces and the American people.

Strengthening National Unity

Austin’s Thanksgiving calls are more than just gestures; they are a reminder of the sacrifices service members and their families make daily. As the country gathers around dinner tables this Thanksgiving, these connections remind us of the men and women safeguarding that very freedom.

By maintaining traditions like these, the U.S. demonstrates that the sacrifices of its service members are never forgotten, and their commitment continues to be honored both at home and abroad.
