Three Defense Department nominees testified before the Senate Armed Services Committee, emphasizing the need to enhance warfighting tools, improve medical care, and modernize the defense industrial base.

Their focus is on adapting to China’s technological advancements and strengthening U.S. national security through strategic modernization efforts.

Nominee Testimonies

Michael P. Duffey, nominated for Undersecretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment, highlighted his commitment to accelerating tool delivery and reinforcing the defense industrial base.

His testimony underscored the importance of providing military capabilities necessary to deter adversaries.

Emil G. Michael, nominated for Undersecretary of Defense for Research and Engineering, focused on adapting to China’s rapid technological progress. He emphasized the need for a competitive defense sector that can respond swiftly to international challenges.

Keith M. Bass, nominated for Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs, prioritized medical readiness and modernizing military healthcare systems. He stressed that a strong military health system is crucial for maintaining a medically ready force.

Strategic Modernization Efforts

  • Duffey aims to implement mandates from President Trump and Secretary Pete Hegseth by enhancing military capabilities.
  • Michael plans to address China’s technological advancements by fostering innovation within the U.S. defense sector.
  • Bass focuses on integrating innovative healthcare solutions to ensure medical readiness among service members.

Geopolitical Challenges

  • The U.S. faces increasing competition from China in technology and defense capabilities.
  • The nominees’ strategies reflect a response to this competitive landscape by prioritizing modernization efforts.
  • A robust defense industrial base is seen as essential in maintaining national security against global competitors.

If confirmed, I would assume responsibility to implement President Trump’s mandate and Secretary Hegseth’s priorities by providing the military with the capabilities and force structure necessary to deter our adversaries and, if necessary, prevail in conflict.

– Michael P. Duffey

Time must be a factor in all of our decisions as we confront an increasingly sophisticated adversary in China…

– Emil G. Michael

A strong military health system is the cornerstone of our National Defense Strategy…

– Keith M. Bass
