On December 2, 2024, Loudoun County welcomed eight new Firefighter/EMTs to the ranks of its Fire and Rescue system during a formal graduation at Cornerstone Chapel in Leesburg.

The ceremony marked the completion of the 46th recruit class, an accelerated 12-week training program designed to prepare recruits for the physical and mental demands of emergency service.

A Milestone for Loudoun’s First Responders

Family, friends, and local officials, including members of the Board of Supervisors, gathered to honor the new recruits. Senior Deputy Clerk Anna Lacey administered the official oath, inducting the graduates into the Loudoun County Combined Fire and Rescue System (LC-CFRS).

Deputy Chief Nicole Pickrell praised the graduates for their determination, noting their perseverance through rigorous physical training, challenging academic standards, and countless hours away from loved ones.

“This is not just a job—it’s a calling,”

said Deputy Chief Pickrell.

“These men and women have shown exceptional dedication, and their journey is only beginning.”

Leadership and Lifelong Learning

Algonkian District Supervisor Juli Briskman and Ashburn District Supervisor Michael Turner emphasized the importance of ongoing mental health awareness and continuous learning.

Their words underscored the evolving nature of public safety and the critical role first responders play in protecting the community.

System Chief Keith H. Johnson reflected on the historical significance of this achievement, reiterating that the fire service’s traditions of courage and sacrifice remain relevant despite modern challenges.

“You carry forward a legacy built on honor and resilience,”

he said, encouraging recruits to educate the public on fire safety and prevention.

Special Recognitions

During the ceremony, several recruits received special honors:

  • Top Recruit Award: Firefighter/EMT Gregory Dash, recognized for his exceptional leadership and commitment.
  • Lieutenant Alex J. Keepers Memorial Award: Firefighter/EMT Cody Griffith, commended for his perseverance and significant personal growth.
  • Physical Fitness Award: Firefighter/EMT John Toler, acknowledged for his dedication to health and wellness throughout the academy.

Accelerated Training and Future Assignments

For only the second time in LCFR history, this class completed an accelerated 12-week course, condensed from the traditional 26 weeks. Applicants already held certifications in firefighting, hazardous materials handling, and EMT services. Their intensive training included Loudoun-specific emergency protocols, technical rescue techniques, and live fire scenarios.

New Firefighter/EMTs

The eight new Firefighter/EMTs will now be stationed across various Loudoun County firehouses, ready to serve their communities:

  • Richard Berryhill
  • Gregory Dash
  • Amber Martinez
  • Christopher Black
  • William Dunn
  • John Toler
  • Bryce Coulby
  • Cody Griffith

Final Thoughts

Loudoun County’s 46th recruit class embodies the spirit of service and commitment that defines first responders. As these new Firefighter/EMTs step into their roles, they carry the responsibility of protecting and educating the community, ensuring safety for years to come.
