The U.S. Air Force is prioritizing air superiority through the Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) program, crucial for countering advanced adversaries like China.

Despite fiscal constraints, leaders emphasize readiness and modernization to maintain strategic advantages in future conflicts.

Emphasizing Air Superiority

The U.S. Air Force is focusing on maintaining air superiority as a fundamental aspect of national defense strategy.

This emphasis is driven by the development of the Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) program, which aims to ensure dominance in potential future conflicts.

Gen. Kenneth Wilsbach, Commander of Air Combat Command, highlighted the importance of air superiority for operational success.

He stated, The entire joint force counts on air superiority. Anything else you want to do in the battle space, if you don’t have air superiority, it becomes much more difficult, if not impossible.

Technological Advancements

The NGAD program includes a sixth-generation fighter and collaborative combat aircraft (CCAs), integrating both manned and unmanned systems.

This integration is seen as essential for maintaining an edge over adversaries developing similar technologies.

Lt. Gen. Dale White emphasized the role of AI and human-machine collaboration in these advancements, ensuring that the U.S. remains at the forefront of military technology.

Strategic Developments

  • NGAD aims to counter China’s advancements in stealth technology.
  • Manned and unmanned systems integration enhances operational flexibility.
  • AI plays a critical role in modernizing combat strategies.
  • Fiscal challenges are acknowledged but do not deter strategic priorities.

Geopolitical Context

Tensions with China underscore the need for advanced air capabilities like NGAD to maintain strategic advantages.

The geopolitical landscape demands readiness against potential threats from nations developing their own sixth-generation aircraft.

Economic Considerations

  • The NGAD program requires significant financial investment.
  • Defense budgets must prioritize technological advancements despite fiscal constraints.
  • Evolving threats necessitate continued economic commitment to defense innovation.

Leadership Perspectives

Maj. Gen. Joseph Kunkel stressed that fiscal constraints should not hinder achieving air superiority:

Fiscal constraints do not change what it takes to win… It takes air superiority, and if America wants to make those investments to win, then we’ll do so.
